Guidance to Relieve Painful Nipples

Nipple pain is common, but it doesn't mean your breastfeeding journey has to stay that way. Meg, who is a certified 'Advanced Practice' Thompson Method Breastfeeding Educator is certified to gently guide you towards relieving your pain in a 1:1 Fine Tuning Session

Fine Tuning

For painful nipples

If you would like personalised guidance to overcome painful nipples and you are not experiencing any other complication. Meg can assist you and your baby, up to 4 weeks of age. If your situation is more complex and/or you have additional complications, such as oral surgery (tongue/lip tie revision), nipple shields, NICU etc, Meg can put you on contact with a certified Thompson Method Practitioner.

What is Fine Tuning?

The aim of Fine Tuning is to receive gentle guidance from an Advanced Practice Thompson Method Educator, to help you and your baby achieve Face to Breast Symmetry, so that you can relieve any pain or discomfort and breastfeed pain-free.

Observation

Meg will observe a full breastfeed ( over Teams or In-Person) so that she can be 'in the moment' with you. Please allow around 60 mins for your session.

(Tip: If using a mobile device, it's handy if someone is with you to hold the camera).

Personalised

You will receive personalised guidance while you and your baby are breastfeeding, based on your unique nipples and breasts. Sometimes the most gentle of adjustments can make the world of difference.

Follow Up

While it's possible that nipple pain can be relieved in the moment, sometimes, it takes a little patience. Included in the fee is 48 hours of follow up guidance from Meg.

Scope of Practice

Educator (TMBE, AP)

A TMBE (AP), shares knowledge with pregnant women in preparation for their birth and breastfeeding journey via the Beautiful Breastfeeding Program. She has successfully graduated from the Thompson Method Breastfeeding Academy with Fine Tuning Credentials, being mentored directly by Dr Robyn Thompson and Rachael Austin and the senior Thompson Method team.

Scope of practice also includes providing Fine-Tuning sessions for breastfeeding mothers of healthy newborns (less than 4 weeks) - see criteria above - to assist in relieving painful nipples. Educators may also hold other qualifications including doula, childbirth educator, naturopath, nutritionist, sleep coach, enrolled nurse or lactation counsellors.

FAQs

Does my baby need to be ready to feed?

It's preferable that your baby is ready to feed, so that your Educator can observe a full breastfeed. If this is looking unlikely, please reach out to your Educator prior to the session so that you can make arrangements.

What do I need to prepare for the session?

There are a few things you can do to help your session be as successful as possible:

  1. Be in a well lit room with the light in front of you so that your Educator has a clear view (having light behind you makes you a 'silhouette' and difficult to see)I

  2. If you'll be using a mobile device, it's handy if you have someone to hold the camera (particularly for an 'over-the-top' view)

  3. If you'll be using a laptop, try positioning the camera so that it is slightly elevated so that your Educator can observe your baby at your breast.

What is an Advanced Practice Educator?

An Advanced Practice Educator has graduated from the Thompson Method Breastfeeding Academy as a certified Educator. She has completed additional hours and a final assessment observed by Dr Robyn and Rachael Austin to ensure that she is proficient in the fine observational skills required for fine tuning, with the aim of relieving or reducing painful nipples.
